The lovely and talented Elisa Rolle has reviewed Phoenix Rising. She says in part,
“Young friendly gay guy, talented but poor, meets older closeted gay man, wealthy and gentle. Is another Cinderfella’s story? Not quite, since our two heroes will not leave happily ever after when the clock strikes the midnight, they need to suffer a bit before.”

I have news to share.
Last week I learned that my novel, Phoenix Rising, will be releasing from MLR Press later this summer rather than next year as I had originally expected. How cool is that?
In addition, my friend and crit partner, Anne Cain, is doing my cover. Anne is the goddess of cover art of all time so I’m just as excited about that as I am about the release. *happy dance*
I don’t have my cover yet, but as soon as I do I’ll post it here so everyone can share the yumminess. Likewise, when I know my exact release date I’ll post it here.

Okay, it’s not something completely new. But now that Phoenix Rising is in the edit phase, I need to get to work on another story.
So I’m planning to return to the Shifting Sands Ranch, just outside San Antonio and revisit Cy and Bobby Lee, the heroes of my short novella, Snake Charmer which will appear in the anthology Shifting Sands due out from MLR … sometime. *g* The antho has yet to be assigned a slot in the publishing schedule, but it’s coming. I promise.
All the stories are set on a ranch in Texas. Daniel, the ranch owner, and the men who work for him have been cursed by a witch. Doomed to assume their “alternative forms” during the full moon, each must find love and acceptance in spite of the curse. Only when they have all done that can they hope to be free.
I turned in the partial for this story a couple of months ago, and the full manuscript isn’t due to the editor for another couple months. But now that I’m sort of between projects I want to get it finished so I can get started on another novel-length work.
So that’s the plan.

Today I sent the first revision of Phoenix off to my editor. Yay!
I wrote an entirely new chapter and did extensive tweaking throughout the manuscript which grew the story from approximately 76k to 82k. I just hope the changes are good ones.
I got an email back saying that she should be through a first pass by the middle of the week, so I’ll be waiting to see what she says. *is nervous*

Editing what I’ve written is much harder than writing it in the first place. Imagine that. Just when I thought writing a novel was the most challenging thing I’d ever done, along comes the edit process.
Of course I’m talking about editing my novel, Phoenix Rising.
The changes my editor asked for are totally reasonable and I agree that they will make the story stronger, but figuring out how to make them is still hurting my brain. *g*
Right now I’m working on a brand new chapter to be inserted between what is now the break up and the reconciliation. It’s sort of a time passes, moving on without moving on kind of chapter. As such I’m afraid I’m not making it interesting enough.
I need to show my heroes during their time apart. Their lives are going on, sure, but they’re still longing for the other, measuring any and all new partners against the one they still love, their soul-mate. *sigh*
At least I want it to be that romantic and sigh-worthy. Whether or not it will be …
We’ll see what my editor says when I turn it over to her.
